    Making Your Day Special Print
As the celebration draws nearer, you will need to begin making some decisions that will bring your event to life.  From deciding what food to serve to the colour of the tablecloths, careful planning of your event can allow your individuality to shine through.

    Choosing Your Theme

As quickly as possible decide on a theme for your event.  This does not have to be a theme such as ‘pirates’ or ‘fairies’, although they can be great fun!  A theme could be colours, type of music or feeling that you want to achieve at your event.  Choosing a theme allows you to coordinate all of the elements of your celebration and make the planning process less daunting.

    Deciding on a Venue

Once you have established the theme of your party, it is time to choose a venue.  The venue will depend on your budget, the type of celebration you are having, the number of guests you want to invite and availability.  Allow lots of time to book a venue as popular sites can be taken up quickly.  If you are having an event at home, be realistic about how many guests will fit into your house and have a back-up plan for outdoor venues in case of rain or excessive heat.

    Decorations

The theme of your party will help you decide the type of decorations you want to have.  Consider the budget you have to work with and get creative.  Homemade decorations can be an inexpensive alternative to professional design services, and can add a personal touch to the event.

    Food and Drink

The time of day and length of your celebration will determine what type of food and drink you will provide.  Be considerate of guest’s dietary needs, but remember you can’t please everyone.  Whether you are having the event professionally catered or doing it yourself, make sure its food that you enjoy.  Be careful to ensure that your venue and caterer meet local food standards, and that there is plenty of assistance in cleaning up.

    Clothes and Accessories

What to wear, what to wear?  In today’s celebrations, the answer to this question is endless!  What you wear is entirely up to you, and in the practical sense, your clothing should be comfortable.  Consider where the event will take place (indoor/outdoor), the season (hot/cold weather), whether the outfit will reflect the theme of the ceremony, and what the clothing will look like in photographs.  You may like to incorporate cultural traditions or family practices in your attire.  For example, the colour red in Chinese traditions is considered good luck.  Including your own cultural flair or adopting new ones is a great way to help you decide your outfit.

    Captured Memories

There are many options when it comes to capturing memories of your celebration.  You can hire a professional photographer, ask a friend or relative to video or give each guest their own camera to document the party.  This is a great idea for larger events where you may not get to spend much time with individual guests, and can allow you to see the event through the eyes of your guests.  Photographs are an important part of any event and it is worth finding money in your budget to get the best memories you can afford.

    Children at Parties

Children can be great fun at any event, but can quickly lose interest or become tired during the festivities.  Consider your young guests in planning will help ensure that the event runs smoothly and everyone has a good time.  Including a colouring book or games as party favours for younger guests is not only a thoughtful gift, but can be a great way to keep them amused.  You may also want to consider having a quiet area at your event, where children can have a nap or have some quiet time away from the party.  There are entertainers and childcare workers who can be booked to supervise children at larger events which allows parents to enjoy the party.
